The bad news: Even as the quality increases, the level of innovative risk-taking seems at a momentary ebb, with the industry's attacks of sequel-itis having become an epidemic. The good news: With the levels of visual craft, technical achievement and storytelling panache in video games at an all-time high, just about everyone in the industry realizes that the path to success lies in the making of fewer, better games. Such experience becomes evident in the top crop of games arriving for the season - though not necessarily in ways preferred by players. So artists, designers and programmers have had plenty of time to master the intricacies of the 360 as well as two Japanese consoles that were unveiled a year later: the Play-Station 3, from Sony and Wii, from Nintendo. This fall marks the seventh for the latest generation of video-game consoles, beginning with the 2005 introduction of the Xbox 360 by Microsoft.
